The tap or water faucet is a device connected to either a sink or bath that allows free running water into the sink or bath.

Taps are either gravity fed, or use a power system to draw water through the tap. Gravity system taps usually have a water storage tank higher than the sink/bath that is filled from the mains water supply. As the mains water supply comes into a property under pressure, the water is able to be pushed into the storage tank ready for someone to open a tap and thus allows the water to run downwards into the basin.

It is believed to be the Romans who first invented the tap, and it had what was effectively a thread that was unscrewed to allow liquid to pass.
