Mouthwash. Not its actual first name. The first mouthwash was not a mouthwash at all. It was an antiseptic and floor cleaner called Listerine. Yes the same Listerine that people now use to freshen the mouths and breath.

It was created in 1879, and the compound was known to have antimicrobial properties. In other words, it kills bacteria.

Before it was used as a mouthwash, it had also been used in surgical procedures as an antiseptic.

Once established in this field, it was also shown to be effective in killing germs in the mouth. Now skip forward to the 1920's and the Listerine creates a new word. Halitosis. The word describes bad breath. It was a remarkable success stating that Listerine could remove Halitosis. Sales rocketed and the rest as they say is history.

Welcome to the floor cleaner/antiseptic that became an essential part of dental hygiene.
