Mars is the 4th planet in the solar system. Many people know it as the Red Planet however the colour is more orange than red. Its diameter is 7792 kilometers and has a mass roughly 1/10 of Earths.

Diameter: 7792 Kilometers
Mass: 0.107 of Earths
Surface temperature: -86 degrees to 20 degrees Celcius
Orbit around sun: 686.97 days
Moons: 2

Mars is named after the Roman God of War although it has been known to the world as a planet for a lot longer than roman times.

Mars is visible with the naked eye however no discernable size can be seen as the object is just too small in the sky. Using a telescope is the best way to view the planet. A 12 inch telescope will really start to show differences in colour of the surface although the image will still be too small to be sharp.

As Mars is a rocky planet rather than gaseous like the Jupiter etc... people like to think that it would be possible to perhaps be made habitable. We know there is water on Mars but there is just too little to be of real benefit to a colony. Any usable water would have to be transported there. Perhaps an asteroid with ice could be mined but all of this is conjecture and will definitely not be in my lifetime.
