Pineapples are fruits natively found in South America. They have been cultivated in the region for many hundreds of years.

Once Europeans discovered the fruit, it was exported to India, Spain, Hawaii and many other countries where large scale production was started.

Currently the Philippines, Costa Rica, Brazil, Indonesia and China make up the biggest 5 producers.

The pineapple used to be grown in large quantities on Hawaii by the Dole Food Company and Del Monte, and this is the reason why ham and pineapple pizzas are called Hawaiian Pizza. Production of pineapple in Hawaii started to decline in 1970 due to competition and Hawaii produces almost no quantity for the world market anymore.
