The island of Cebu is approximately in the middle region of the Philippines in an area known as the Visayas. The main city on the island of Cebu is called the City of Cebu or Cebu City. Cebu island is an elongated island with a width of about 45 kilometers and about 250 kilometers in length. It has many neighbouring islands including Mactan which has the main airport for the Visayas, Malapascua which is a local resort island just about 1 hour from the north tip by boat. Leyte is a large island to the right and large island Negros is to the left. To the south east there is also the reasonable sized island of Bohol.

Cebu and the surrounding islands have their own language that is called by many names including bisaya, visaya and cebuano. Cebuano is actually the most spoken language natively in the Philippines however due to the capital city being in the north of the Philippines, Tagalog became the official language.

Cebu is quite a popular area for recreation with many rare and interesting pastimes being available. The island of Malapascua just to the north is popular for diving and has regular visits from thresher sharks. Cebu island has 9 golf courses of which the Cebu Country Club is considered the best.

On Bohol island to the south there is a remarkable geographical feature called the Chocolate Hills. There are something like 1260 hills all conical in shape. During the dry season the greenery turns brown as it dries out.
